Carolina Ramirez, Spark Mentor

What began as a high school volunteering requirement quickly became one of the most meaningful and formative experiences of my life. At just 15 years old, I walked into the Sherkow Center not knowing that I had found a second home—one that would stay with me through college, the uncertainty of the pandemic, and beyond. For over seven years, Spark wasn’t just something I did—it was a place I truly looked forward to every Wednesday afternoon.

Working closely with Dr. Sherkow was nothing short of inspiring. Being mentored by someone so deeply knowledgeable and passionate about her work was a privilege. But what made it truly powerful was witnessing, firsthand, how her expertise—and the collective efforts of everyone at the Center—genuinely changed lives. That sense of purpose and impact made it easy to keep coming back with enthusiasm and gratitude.

Each week, I spent an hour with my buddy. Whether we were having a water balloon fight in the backyard or choreographing skits to explore different emotions, these moments were always grounded in trust, consistency, and mutual growth. The bond I formed with my buddy was one of the most rewarding parts of the experience. I learned so much from him—from the intricate workings of the NYC subway system to behind-the-scenes facts about the movie industry—all through the lens of connection and curiosity.

Beyond the buddy relationships, I found a community among the other mentors—some of whom have become lifelong friends. The Sherkow Center fostered an environment where everyone was encouraged to show up as they were. It didn’t matter what kind of day you or your buddy were having—we approached it together, with patience, empathy, and a shared commitment to growth. The Center created a safe space where both buddies and mentors learned more about the world and about themselves.

I find myself reflecting on my time at the Sherkow Center often. The lessons I learned—about compassion, communication, and understanding others—continue to shape how I show up in the world, even in a corporate setting. The Center taught me how to listen, how to lead with empathy, and how to celebrate people for exactly who they are.

I am deeply grateful for everything the Sherkow Center has given me, and I look forward to continuing to support its incredible mission for many years to come. Thank you, truly, for the impact you’ve had on my life.
